Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Saudi technology was not born in laboratories as much as it was born out of necessity. A merchant wanting to sell in their own language, a customer wanting to pay the way they are accustomed to, and a shipment that must reach an address that maps cannot accurately locate. From these everyday problems, Saudi tech companies built their solutions, producing products closer to the market's reality than solutions designed for other markets and then imported, which granted them an advanced position in the region. And because a merchant’s challenges in Riyadh resemble those in Kuwait, Cairo, and Amman, this technology became exportable. It travels alongside the brands it serves, expanding into markets and countries that share its language, purchasing patterns, and operational challenges.
In this context, Salla, the Saudi e-commerce platform, has obtained the "Saudi Tech" membership for its product, the "Salla E-Commerce Platform", after the "Made in Saudi" program confirmed that the platform meets the required criteria for joining. The membership grants Salla the right to use the "Saudi Tech" mark on its registered and certified product throughout its validity period, and to benefit from its advantages.
"Saudi Tech" is a sub-brand under the "Made in Saudi" program supervised by the Saudi Exports Development Authority. It is awarded to local tech products in the fields of software, hardware, and emerging technologies, in collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, and the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority. The program aims to enhance trust in national tech products and expand their market presence locally and internationally, supporting the growth of non-oil GDP in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
The mark is granted only after a multi-stage verification process, starting with registering the tech entity with the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, followed by product registration and review, culminating in approval by the "Made in Saudi" program team.
Salla was launched from Makkah Al-Mukarramah in 2016 and evolved into an integrated platform that allows merchants to set up and manage their online stores and connect them with payment, shipping, inventory, and marketing solutions. Obtaining the "Saudi Tech" recognition signifies that a wide sector of e-commerce in the Kingdom, from startups to major national brands, operates on an officially certified Saudi tech infrastructure, locally developed to suit the needs of merchants and consumers in the Saudi market.
This accreditation intersects with Salla's direction toward empowering Saudi brands to expand into markets outside the Kingdom, as the "Saudi Tech" program focuses on elevating the global presence of national tech products and increasing tech product exports to priority markets.
Salla's induction into the program reflects the growing role of national technology in the digital economy's infrastructure, and the transition of the "Made in Saudi" label from tangible goods to the systems upon which commerce itself is built.
