SEO & GEO GUIDE

Get your store found on Google — and cited by AI

A practical guide for Salla merchants: what actually gets your pages indexed and ranked, how to be cited in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity — and what Salla already does for you, with no extra apps.

The 60-second version

If you read nothing else, these seven produce about 80% of the result.

1
Connect Search Console and submit your sitemapWithout it you're flying blind. Dashboard: Marketing Tools → SEO.
2
Write a unique title and description for every productDon't leave the fields empty, and don't reuse one description across twenty products.
3
Fill in brand, GTIN/MPN, price and availabilityThese are the fields search engines and AI read to match your product against the same product elsewhere.
4
Connect Google Merchant CenterYour product feed is the entry point to the Shopping Graph and to AI shopping surfaces.
5
Collect real reviews — volume mattersTop-ranked products in AI shopping results carry markedly higher review counts than the rest.
6
Don't block AI crawlers in robots.txtGPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended. Blocked means never cited.
7
Build presence beyond your own domainEngines cite third-party sources far more than your own site: reviews, forums, media, marketplaces.
Chapter 1

The foundation: being findable at all

Before ranking, you need to be indexed. These steps are done once and pay off for years — all of them inside the Salla dashboard.

  1. 1

    Turn on your own domain

A store on its own domain builds authority that belongs to you. A sub-path builds it for the platform. This is the first and most consequential long-term decision.

  2. 2

Submit your sitemap to Search Console

Marketing Tools → SEO → Sitemap. Copy the URL, add it in Search Console, and verify ownership. Salla generates and updates the sitemap automatically as you add products.

  3. 3

Set your homepage title and description

Title: store name + what you sell + city or market. Keep it under 60 characters so it isn't truncated; the description runs 120–155 characters and must give a reason to click.

  4. 4

    Review your robots.txt

Salla lets you edit robots.txt from the dashboard. Make sure you aren't blocking product or category pages — and aren't blocking AI crawlers. A mistake here costs all of your traffic at once.

  5. 5

    Connect Analytics and Tag Manager

You can't tell what's working without measurement. Connect early so data accumulates before you need it.

Why isn't my new store showing up yet?

Indexing takes time — days to weeks for a new store. Don't rebuild your pages every week assuming something is broken. Submit the sitemap, publish content, and watch the indexing report in Search Console.

Chapter 2

The product page is your real landing page

Most search visits never touch your homepage — they land on one product. That's where the battle is won or lost, and it's also where AI collects your product data.

  1. 1

    Product titles: descriptive, not clever

Use: [product type] + [key attribute] + [category/use] + [brand]. "Automatic 15-bar espresso machine with built-in grinder — De'Longhi" beats "Your morning companion". Nobody searches for a clever name.

  2. 2

A unique description that answers buying questions

At least 150 words, written for this product alone. Cover: who it's for, size/capacity/materials, what's in the box, shipping time, return policy. Copy the questions you actually get on WhatsApp — those are your keywords.

  3. 3

    Fill in brand and GTIN/MPN

Salla exposes MPN and GTIN fields at product level. These identifiers are what let Google and AI match your listing to the same product elsewhere and compare it on price. Leaving them empty makes your product anonymous to machines.

  4. 4

    Images and alt text

Add alt text that accurately describes the image — it opens up image search and helps screen readers. Give the file a meaningful name before upload, not IMG_2931.

  5. 5

    Product URL (slug)

Salla supports Arabic URLs natively. Keep the slug short and matched to the product name, and avoid changing it once indexed — Salla does not yet offer 301 redirects from the old URL.

  6. 6

Turn reviews on, and ask for them

Reviews aren't decoration. In an analysis of ChatGPT shopping results, top-ranked products carried roughly 124% more reviews than the rest. Ask once, briefly, after delivery.

The most expensive mistake: the supplier's description

If your product description is identical to the one on fifty other stores, you've given Google no reason to pick you. Rewrite it in your own voice, even if it's only 120 words.

Chapter 3

Categories and content: capturing demand before the purchase

Product pages capture people who know what they want. Category and content pages capture people who haven't decided — the majority, and the ones asking AI.

  1. 1

Put real copy on category pages

A category page with no text is just an image grid to Google. Add 150–300 words explaining how to choose within the category, the differences between types, and price ranges. Category pages target "buy X" queries — the highest purchase intent there is.

  2. 2

Build topic clusters, not scattered articles

Search engines and AI expand one question into several sub-questions (query fan-out). A store that covers a topic from every angle gets cited more than one that published a single article.

  3. 3

Write the way people actually ask

"How long does perfume last?" not "Fragrance longevity duration". In Arabic, Gulf dialect phrasing in question headings matches what people really type — the gap between formal Arabic and dialect is real for retrieval matching.

  4. 4

Put the direct answer in the first 60 words

Generative engines extract a passage, not a page. Lead with the plain answer, then elaborate. Princeton's GEO study found citing sources lifts citation by 40% and statistics by 37%, while keyword stuffing drops it by 10%.

  5. 5

Add an FAQ block to every page that matters

FAQs are the single most citable content format: a clear question, a short self-contained answer. Put them on product and category pages, not only on a separate FAQ page.

The Arabic opportunity

Specialist Arabic e-commerce content is still scarce compared to English. A small number of genuinely good Arabic pages travels a long way — and because AI leans on a narrow set of Arabic sources, whoever fills the gap gets cited.

Chapter 4

GEO: getting cited in AI answers

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — visibility inside AI-generated answers. About 70% of it is the same SEO described above. This chapter is the other 30%.

How these engines actually pick stores

ChatGPTIts own index, plus commercial indices, plus direct merchant product feeds. The large majority of product cards still come from web crawl, but the feed share is growing fast, and commercial details are taken from the first offer only.
Google (AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini)Draws on the Shopping Graph, built from Merchant Center feeds and crawled pages. Google states plainly that AI features run on the same core Search ranking systems — there is no magic file.
PerplexityIts own index with live retrieval on every query, and it cites social sources at a far higher rate than the others.
Claude and othersGeneral web retrieval. Behaves like a citation engine rather than a shopping engine — there is no product feed programme.
  1. 1

1 · Make your structured data complete

Salla emits JSON-LD for your store and products automatically — but how rich it is depends on you. A product with no brand, no GTIN and no reviews produces thin structured data. Fill the fields and the data fills out with them.

  2. 2

2 · Connect Merchant Center and keep the feed clean

This is the highest-leverage action available today. Priority order: real-time price and availability accuracy (the top cause of disapprovals), precise descriptive titles, GTIN/MPN/brand, product category, high-resolution images.

  3. 3

    3 · Don't block AI crawlers

Check robots.txt and confirm you allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot. Blocked content cannot be cited. It really is that simple.

  4. 4

4 · Build presence off your own site

Brands are cited via third parties several times more often than via their own domain. In Saudi and the Gulf that means: genuine activity on X, Arabic YouTube reviews, a Google Business profile, Maroof registration, presence on Amazon.sa and Noon, and local media coverage.

  5. 5

    5 · Write citable content

A direct 40–60 word answer, comparison tables, specific numbers with their source, a visible last-updated date. Vague, sprawling content offers nothing to extract.

  6. 6

6 · Keep your brand identity consistent

Same store name, same description, same address across your site, Google profile, social accounts and marketplaces. Engines assemble an "entity" from these signals — inconsistency takes it apart.

Be honest with yourself about llms.txt

Salla gives you control over an LLMs.txt file from the dashboard, and enabling it costs nothing but a few minutes. But the evidence through 2026 says AI engines do not go looking for this file: in an analysis of 137,000 sites, 97% of valid files received no requests at all. Enable it — but don't build your strategy on it. Structured data, the Merchant Center feed and reviews are the real levers.

What changed recently that you should know

  • The working pattern today is "discovered in AI, purchased on your site". Agentic checkout protocols are still US-first and have not reached the Gulf.
  • Your product record — the feed, the identifiers, the attributes — now matters more than on-page tuning. This is a data and merchandising job more than a content job.
  • "Top 10" listicles and comparison pages saw citations fall sharply in ChatGPT after 2026 model updates, with a swing toward official and owned sources. They still work on Google and Perplexity.
  • Search Console added generative-AI performance reports in August 2026 — but they are impressions only, Google only, and show no query detail.
Chapter 5

What Salla gives you out of the box

Much of the above needs a paid app or a developer on other platforms. On Salla it's default behaviour. Here's what works from day one — and what doesn't.

Automatic, no setup

Structured data, generated for you

Every store emits Organization and WebPage JSON-LD, and every product page emits Product with an Offer carrying price, currency, availability and offer URL. No app, no code.

Complete sharing tags

Canonical, Open Graph — including product tags for price, availability, brand and condition — and Twitter Cards, on every page.

Native Arabic URLs

The slug is built from the Arabic product name with no transliteration. The storefront is RTL by default and the dashboard is fully Arabic.

Automatic sitemap

Generated and kept current as you add products, and ready to submit to Search Console straight from the dashboard.

CDN delivery

Images and assets are served over Salla's CDN, which supports page speed — one of the page-experience signals in search.

40+ supported languages

With manual or instant translation, opening GCC markets and expansion beyond Saudi Arabia on the same store.

And what Salla doesn't offer today

301 redirects from an old URL to a new one are not available yet — the request sits on Salla's public suggestions board marked "under consideration". Practically: settle your product URLs before publishing, and avoid changing them once indexed. We list this because a guide that hides its gaps doesn't deserve trust on anything else.

Why the balance tips toward Salla stores in the Arabic market

Arabic is native, not bolted on

Arabic URLs, RTL direction and an Arabic merchant dashboard aren't later additions. Global platforms treat Arabic as a second language, and it shows in URL structure and theme coverage.

Control isn't sold by tier

robots.txt editing is available to merchants rather than reserved for higher plans — unlike some regional platforms that restrict it to growth and professional tiers.

LLMs.txt as a first-class control

Few platforms offer merchants any control over an LLMs.txt file at all. Its current impact is limited, as explained above, but it signals infrastructure moving with the generative-search era rather than behind it.

Sheer weight on the Arabic web

68K+ active merchants, and one in two Saudi online shoppers has bought from a Salla store. Search engines and AI read that web — and Salla stores are densely present in it.

SEO capability comparison — as publicly documented

Based on each platform's published official documentation, plus a direct inspection of a live Salla storefront's output. The scale is deliberately neutral: "documented" does not mean better, and "not documented" does not mean absent — it means we found no official source for it.

Chapter 6

How to measure — and why the numbers will mislead you

The hard part of GEO isn't doing the work, it's measuring it. Know what your tools can and cannot see before you judge your own effort.

  1. 1

    Search Console: start here

Since August 2026 it shows generative-AI performance reports. What it gives you: impressions. What it doesn't: the queries that surfaced you, clicks, an AI Overviews vs AI Mode split, or anything outside Google.

  2. 2

Watch branded search as a proxy

The core measurement problem: someone who hears about you in ChatGPT rarely arrives through a link from it — they search your name or type it directly. Branded search rising without an ad campaign is the best available evidence that AI is mentioning you.

  3. 3

    Segment AI referrers in Analytics

Create a segment for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Volume will be small, but purchase intent is high.

  4. 4

Add "how did you hear about us?" at checkout

The simplest and most accurate instrument you have. One optional field reveals what no analytics dashboard will.

  5. 5

Test manually — and repeat each query five times

Pick 20 queries that matter, run them across three platforms, repeat each 3–5 times and record a rate ("cited 3 of 5"). AI answers are non-deterministic; a single run is an anecdote, not a measurement.

A warning about published figures

The 2026 numbers circulating on "conversion lift from AI traffic" are flatly contradictory — from "31% higher" to "23x higher" to "worse than Google". The honest read: volume is low, intent is high, and the multiplier is unknown. Don't build a plan on any of them.

ACTION PLAN

A 30-day plan

Work top down. Each week builds on the last, and week one alone makes a measurable difference.

Week 1

Technical foundation

Turn on your own domain if you haven't
Connect Search Console and submit the sitemap
Connect Analytics and Tag Manager
Review robots.txt — confirm you block neither products nor AI crawlers
Write your homepage title and description
Week 2

Your top 20 products

Rewrite the titles of your top 20 products in descriptive form
Write a unique 150+ word description for each
Fill in brand and GTIN/MPN
Add alt text to every main image
Add 3 FAQs per product
Week 3

Categories and the feed

Write 150–300 words on every main category page
Connect Google Merchant Center and clear every feed disapproval
Verify price and availability match between store and feed
Check your structured data with Google's Rich Results Test
Week 4

Trust and presence

Turn on post-delivery review requests
Update your Google Business profile in Arabic and English
Unify brand name and description across every account
Publish one guide answering the question you're asked most
Record your baseline: impressions, branded search, the 20-query test

Six mistakes that undo everything above

One description across dozens of products

Duplicate content makes Google pick one page and ignore the rest.

Changing product URLs after indexing

With no 301 redirects on Salla today, the old URL becomes an error page and its ranking is lost.

Accidentally blocking crawlers in robots.txt

One wrong line can remove your store from search entirely. Re-check it after any edit.

Empty brand and GTIN fields

A product with no identifiers can't be matched by machines, so it drops out of shopping comparisons.

Putting information in images instead of text

Price, size and specs inside an image are unreadable. Write them as text.

Expecting results in two weeks

SEO compounds. Judge the work fairly at 90 days, not at 14.

Frequently asked

Indexing usually takes days to weeks after you submit the sitemap. Ranking for competitive terms takes months of content, reviews and links. Judge your work at 90 days, not at two weeks.

Start from a store that's configured from the ground up

Structured data, sitemap, Arabic URLs and sharing tags work from the first moment. You just add the products.

Sources & verification

Salla capabilities above were verified by direct inspection of a live Salla storefront's output and from the Salla Help Center. Other platforms' capabilities come from their published official documentation as of 21 September 2026. Figures on AI engine behaviour come from published studies and are inherently subject to change.
